As you may have heard, the How To Concerts team grew this summer. Jolene & Luke welcomed their fourth child into the world, we moved into an office, and Jake started as a new employee. With the summer coming to a close and the event calendar picking back up, we thought this was the perfect time to do a “get to know you“ activity with our newest employee!

Jake, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself to kick things off.

My name is Jake Ostrow, I am from Portland, Oregon and am 29 years old – my preferred pronouns are he, him, his. I went to college at Portland State University for undergraduate and graduate school. I got my start in this industry as an advisor for the campus programming board at University of Wyoming – this is my first year not being heavily involved in a welcome week events schedule on a campus. I’m sure all of the staff advisors out there can imagine how strange that feels for me right now.

What are some of your hobbies?

My main hobby is going to see live music, I feel very fortunate to be able to do that for work as well. When I am not attending concerts or looking for new music, I enjoy spending time outdoors – biking, camping, hiking, running, etc. Right now a big focus of mine is exploring Green Bay, trying to find the cool spots and making some friends. I also play way, way, way too much Fortnite on PS4.

What would be your first question after waking up from being cryogenically frozen for 1000 years?

My first question would definitely be “Are jam bands still a thing?” I think that would help me immediately determine the status of the world – freeze me back up if they aren’t. In all seriousness, the majority of my free thought and energy goes into figuring out where and when I will see my next show. I am in a bit of a “not quite midlife but still confusing music crisis” right now, my allegiances may be switching from The String Cheese Incident to Phish….. to be continued.

Since you’ve had a couple months to process, what do you enjoy most about the new office space?

First, I have really enjoyed my role taking care of the office plants. We have one succulent in particular that decided to sprout a 3ft tall flower, each day I enjoy making a new mark on the window to see how much it grew – I know, it’s the small things.

I also really enjoy having Jolene and Luke’s dog Penny and the interns (their children) around. Some days I go into the office and it’s totally silent, some days I go in and there is complete chaos. You never know what to expect and I actually really like that. Plus, I don’t need to bring anything into the office to decorate because the kids make us so much art.

Last question… What music are you listening to right now?

I have been listening to a ton of Khruangbin lately, if you haven’t taken the time to check them out you definitely should. Phish just finished up a tour and I have been listening to each show on that run all summer. Other artists in my rotation right now are Greensky Bluegrass, Spafford. Nicolas Jaar, anything Les Claypool is involved in, and Gary Clark Jr.
